The Elemental Blessings Series by Sharon Shinn

Sharon Shinn has been one of my go to writers for several years now.First I read Summers at Castle Auburn and The Safe-Keeper's Secret and then I found her Novel of Twelve Houses series. I adored everything about that series. Recently, I did an author search to see what new she had put out. Lucky me, I found Troubled Waters and Royal Airs the first two books in the Elemental Blessings series.
Troubled Waters

Zoe Ardelay receives astonishing and unwelcome news: she has been chosen to become the king's fifth wife. Forced to go to the royal city, she manages to slip away and hide on the shores of the mighty river.

It's there that Zoe realizes she is a coru prime ruled by the elemental sign of water. She must return to the palace, not as an unwilling bride for the king, but a woman with power in her own right. But as Zoe unlocks more of the mysteries of her blood—and the secrets of the royal family—she must decide how to use her great power to rise above the deceptions and intrigue of the royal court.

Royal Airs

Josetta is a princess of one of the Five Families. But she is far from the throne, so she is free to spend her days working in the poorest sections of the city.

Rafe Adova lives the life of a career gambler in those slums. He has no real ambition—until the night he helps a girl named Corene, who looks like she’s stumbled into the wrong bar.

Josetta is fascinated by the man who has helped her sister. Rafe is unlike anyone she’s encountered—someone seemingly devoid of elemental blessings.

Rafe is also drawn to Josetta, but when he is assaulted by foreign mercenaries and they discover the reason behind the attack, Rafe and Josetta realize that the truth could endanger not only their newfound love, but also their very lives…

Like the Novel of Twelve Houses series each book focuses on a different character in the same connected world. It's almost like visits from old friends when a previous point of view character shows up in the story. The main character in Troubled Waters surprised me at times as I got to know the character. It was an enjoyable element of the story among many. I am excited to see who shows up from Troubled Waters and Royal Airs when Jeweled Fire is released on November 3, 2015.
